Understanding Your Conversion: JPG to PNG vs. JPG to WebP

When to Convert JPG to PNG

Converting from a JPG (a lossy format) to PNG (a lossless format) is a common but often misunderstood task.

The Important Warning:

Be aware: converting a JPG to PNG will almost always result in a dramatic increase in file size (often 5-10x larger). This is not a bug. The lossless PNG format is forced to faithfully save all the "noise" and "artifacts" from the compressed JPG, leading to a large, inefficient file.

Use PNG if: You absolutely require a lossless format and file size is not a concern.

When to Convert JPG to WebP (Recommended)

Converting JPG to WebP is a modern, high-performance choice. This is a "lossy-to-lossy" conversion that leverages WebP's superior compression algorithms.

The "Lossy-to-Lossy" Strategy:

The goal is to get a smaller file than your original JPG. You do this by setting a quality (like 85%) that is *lower* than the original. This introduces new, compounded compression artifacts, but they are often imperceptible and the file size savings (typically 25-35%) are significant.

Use WebP if: Your goal is to get smaller, faster-loading images for a website, and you are willing to accept a tiny, managed quality trade-off.

A 100% Private and Free Converter

This tool is built on modern browser APIs. Unlike other "free online converter" sites, your files are never uploaded to a server. The entire process—decoding, drawing, and re-encoding—happens securely within your own browser. This makes it the fastest, most private way to convert your images.
